While in Boston speaking to a gathering of professional actors on May 14, 1920, Warren G. Harding announced his campaign platform: "America's present need is not heroics but healing, not nostrums but normal'ty, not revolution but restoration." Harding had intended to say "normality" but the word accidentally came out "normalty". A newspaper reporter quoted Harding as having said "normalcy" as he believed the word sounded better than "normalty." The Republican Party adopted the misquote, and the Republican Party platform of 1920 became "A Return to Normalcy."
